da fezbet: Former Celtic defender Erik Sviatchenko has paid tribute to Mikael Lustig as he prepares to exit the club this summer, as reported by The Scottish Sun.
What’s he said?
Lustig’s current contract at the Hoops expires this summer and as the paper report, the defender revealed recently that his time in Glasgow could be up amid rocky negotiations with the club hierarchy.
Since then there’s been plenty of reflection on the Swedish defender’s time at Celtic and one of his former teammates, fan favourite defender Erik Sviatchenko, has taken to the media to talk up his contributions to the Hoops over the years.
Was Georgios Samaras a better player for Celtic than fans gave him credit for? Keith from C’mon the Hoops explains why he was in the video below…
As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said:
“Mikael has had an amazing period of success at Celtic.
To win eight titles in a row is incredible. I was privileged to play alongside him as he is my fellow Scandinavian and we were partners during Brendan Rodgers’ Invincible season which will live long in the memory of the players as well as the Celtic supporters.
Mikael has done well to stay at a club like Celtic for such a lengthy period of time and he kept his levels very high. He gave the club so much and captained the side many times.
What Mikael has achieved with Celtic is amazing. He won so many trophies but the Celtic fans will also remember Lustig fondly for his goal celebrations and sense of fun.
He really was the life and soul of the party in the Celtic dressing room.”
Lustig’s legacy
Sviatchenko is right to pay special tribute to what the Swedish veteran has done at the club.
Lustig’s career at Celtic will age very well indeed.
Winning a monstrous 16 trophies since joining the side in 2012, there aren’t many who have enjoyed such a successful career at Celtic Park throughout the club’s long and storied history.
He may have received plenty of fan criticism for dwindling form over the last two years but that perception will fade in time and he’ll go down as a Hoops icon.
For one half of Glasgow, he’ll always be welcome in the city whatever happens from here on out.
