da dobrowin: According to Sky Sports, Southampton are scouting Brentford defender Chris Mepham and attacker Ollie Watkins.
What’s the story?
Both Mepham and Watkins have endured injury-hit campaigns so far, however, they have both impressed when fit and in the team.
21-year-old centre-back Mepham broke into the Bees’ first team last season and hasn’t looked back since. The 4-cap Wales international is now a vital member of the squad and has impressed with his calmness and leadership skills.

The Brentford academy graduate has certainly shown enough to suggest he is deserving of an opportunity to test himself in the top flight.
Watkins, meanwhile, has been in fine form this season. The 23-year-old left-winger has racked up seven goals and four assists in 22 Championship outings.
Not what’s needed now
It is no surprise, then, that both Mepham and Watkins are attracting Premier League interest. Southampton, though, are not in a position where they can afford to gamble on such targets to be able to immediately thrive in the top tier.
The Saints are currently heading for yet another relegation battle. In order to survive such a scrap, Ralph Hasenhuttl must bolster his ranks with proven, experienced pros.
Mepham and Watkins are young and untested. Whilst they both promise much for the future, neither is ready for the responsibility that would be asked of them at St Mary’s Stadium for the remainder of the campaign,
The aforementioned report also speculates that both would come with a price tag of at least £20 million each, making them far too high risk targets for the south coast club to pursue.
