What they ask
da bet7: The board give you a bit of flexibility when it comes to their demands. Depending on your standing as a manager and the amount of cash you want out of them, that is.
da apostebet: Top half in the Premier League is the bare minimum, however, while reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa League is needed to guarantee job security.
What they give
Starting with a healthy £31 million, you step into the shoes of Claude Puel with the club in a healthy position financially.
Wiggle room on the wage budget makes for a fair bit of manoeuvrability in the market, too.
Three to Buy
Nacho Abeledo
Available for under the million mark, Abeledo is a hot prospect for a club of Southampton’s standing.
His technical attributes are the undoubted standout, but he will develop into a handy squad member with the right game time.
Saido Berahino
Berahino’s issues with Tony Pulis shouldn’t put you off of investing in him on Football Manager.
His quality, which is clear to see in his technical stats, would add significantly to the Southampton forward line.
Jorge Mere
Mere may not inspire you in 2016/17, but the Spaniard is an investment for the future.
His potential is the real reason you should move to sign him. Capable of becoming one of the world’s best ball-playing central defenders, Sporting Gijon are well aware of his high ceiling and will demand a significant chunk of your budget.
Three to Sell
Maya Yoshida
Perhaps considered a solid squad option by some, Yoshida’s value makes it worth selling him.
Generating a decent amount of revenue, a younger, better defender could be signed. His concentration (11) is the greatest concern if you are to place any faith in him.
Jose Fonte
Although a vital player in the Saints team at the start of your save, it won’t be long before you will consider selling the Portuguese centre-back.
Perhaps only one injury away from serious decline, cashing in on Fonte early on in your save is an undeniable temptation.
Jay Rodriguez
Plagued by injuries on Football Manager, just as he has been in the real world, Rodriguez’s versatility makes him a handy squad member, particularly with the heavy schedule Southampton have in the first season of your save.
With the big budget Saints have a healthier alternative could be bought with the hefty revenue from Rodriguez’s sale.
Three to nurture
James Ward-Prowse
For how long can we pronounce Ward-Prowse as the great hope?
A good while yet, I’d say. A magician over the dead ball, JWP develops into one of England’s best midfielders and can easily be moulded into a wide midfielder if required.
Callum Slattery
As he’s just 17 at the beginning of your save, Slattery’s initial numbers are underwhelming.
The potential is there, though, and patience will be rewarded in his improvement. Slattery could be the man to join Ward-Prowse in central midfield in a couple of seasons time.
Alfie Jones
Only 18 years old at the start of your save, Jones is almost ready to play a role in the first team squad. His impressive determination (19) is the initial highlight, but Jones will quickly become a regular starter with the right development.
