And a recent report from The Independent suggests he could be in the market for a new attacking midfielder.
The report claims Spurs are considering a loan move for Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Lemar, with a €60m option-to-buy clause included as part of the deal.
The 24-year-old winger has largely flopped in La Liga, failing to rattle the net or tally an assist in the first 21 games he’s played for the Rojiblancos in 2019/20.
His struggle this season suggests Mourinho could be taking a big risk by signing the young player, especially when we consider Nicolas Pepe’s struggle to adapt to life at Arsenal this season.
Pepe scored three goals and provided three assists prior to the Gunners’ weekend clash with Crystal Palace, which is by no means a terrible return but certainly a touch underwhelming given he joined the club in a £72m deal.
If we compare both players’ final seasons in France before they earned big-money moves to more prestigious European leagues, we can see that Pepe significantly outperformed Spurs’ current target.
The biggest gap between them can be seen in their respective final products.
Lemar could only manage two goals and eight assists for Monaco, which is a respectable figure but, needless to say, one that falls extraordinarily short in comparison to Pepe’s 22 goals and 11 assists for Lille.
The only stat in which the duo were on equal grounds was key passes per game – both Lemar and Pepe could boast with 1.8 – but Arsenal’s talent outshines the current Atletico Madrid ace with 2.7 dribbles per game to 1.5, while he was subsequently fouled 2.8 times per game compared to 1.4 times per game.
Since Pepe was clearly the more productive talent in the season preceding their respective exits from Ligue 1, it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that this could serve as a warning sign for Spurs in their January pursuit, particularly when coupled with Lemar’s failure to make the grade under Diego Simeone.
With this in mind, Mourinho should tread carefully and think twice before entering murky waters and concluding a risky piece of transfer business.
