The Athletic’s Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers has claimed that Jack Grealish would be a superb signing for the club if Aston Villa are relegated, although he does not foresee a transfer being completed, per The Molineux View podcast (March 10th, 42:25).
What’s he said?
Grealish has been leading the charge for Villa as they attempt to stave off the consistent threat of relegation.
They are currently 19th in the Premier League, two points behind 17th-placed Watford, with 10 games of their season remaining. They were beaten 4-0 by Leicester City on Monday night.
Grealish has scored seven goals and registered six assists in 26 games, and he has been linked with a big-money move to Manchester United.
A Wolves fan asked Spiers if the club should look to bring the 24-year-old into the club, provided Dean Smith’s men lose their battle with the drop.
He said: “I mean Grealish would be an outstanding addition to this Wolves squad, but I don’t see it happening for one minute because you’ve only got to look at where they bring their players from.
“They don’t pay over the odds for domestic players, because as we know traditionally, English players or players based in the Premier League or the Championship will cost more money than their equivalents in Spain or Portugal.”
For true Wolves fans only: How much did each of these players cost?
A statement
Wolves should try to make this happen.
Of course, reports state that Grealish could command a fee of over £60m but there is a hypothetical scenario in which Wolves could conceivably afford him.
They are fighting a battle of their own as they attempt to qualify for Europe; they are sixth in the Premier League, just two points behind United in fifth and five behind fourth-placed Chelsea.
If Manchester City’s proposed ban from next season’s Champions League is upheld, there is the possibility that the fifth-placed team could go into the competition.
Should Wolves manage to find their way into the Champions League, a marquee acquisition could well be needed to go with their qualification.
Grealish could be that; he would be a star player in their team and potentially have the possibility of guiding the club into Europe.
If they beat United to the punch, both to Champions League qualification and to Grealish’s transfer, it would be an incredible statement.
Meanwhile, Wolves have to unleash this man!
